About the Timber

Clean. Fine-grained.
Increasingly hard to find.

Kauri was prized above all other New Zealand timbers for its straight grain, consistent colour, and near-total absence of knots. It featured in the finest pre-1950s homes — joinery, flooring, linings — and has not been commercially logged for decades. Every board here was recovered from Auckland demolitions.

Because supply is limited, larger remachined orders may require notice. Salvaged original boards in ex 6" (130–138mm) are available subject to current stock. If you have a specific project, talk to David early so he can set material aside.

Remachined Kauri gives you consistent widths, clean profiles, and straight-edged boards ready to lay. Original salvaged boards keep the full original width and character — ideal when you need to match an existing floor exactly or want the raw, unprocessed look. Both come from the same source: pre-1950s Auckland homes.

Remachined Kauri

Salvaged Kauri boards, de-nailed, dressed, and re-profiled to your specified width and thickness. Available in 19mm T&G floorboard, 12mm T&G overlay, and 9mm D4S overlay. Widths from 60mm to 150mm — machined on site to order. Ideal for new installs and extensions where consistency is key. Larger orders may require lead time.

Salvaged Original

Ex 6" boards — 130–138mm original width

Original Kauri boards pulled from pre-1950s homes and cleaned up for re-laying. Available in ex 6" (130–138mm) subject to current stock — availability varies. These boards carry the full character of over 100 years in a home: the colour, the grain, and the slight variation that only time creates. Best for heritage restorations and matching original floors.

Matching a pre-1950s Kauri floor

Original Kauri homes demand Kauri replacements. Board widths are machined to your exact spec so extensions, repairs, and new rooms blend invisibly into the existing floor. No staining, no pretending — just the same timber.

Heritage restorations

If you are restoring a villa or bungalow and the original floor was Kauri, there is no substitute. Salvaged original boards in ex 6" are available for those who want to keep every element authentic.

New builds seeking premium timber

Kauri is the cleanest, most consistent native timber available. For a new home or renovation where the floor is the statement, remachined Kauri in a wide board delivers something imported timber simply cannot — provenance, character, and a story that belongs here.

Overlays where depth is a constraint

The 12mm and 9mm overlay options mean Kauri is achievable even when a full 19mm installation is not possible. Talk to David about your clearances and he will confirm what works.
