Native Timber Flooring

Rimu.
The floor Auckland was built on.

It warmed the homes your grandparents grew up in. It is no longer logged. And if your house has it — or you want it — this is the only place left to source it properly.

About the Timber

Warm. Characterful.
Impossible to buy new.

Rimu was the timber of choice in Auckland homes from the early 1900s through to the 1960s. Protected since the 1990s, it has not been commercially logged for decades. The only way to get it now is through salvage — and that is exactly where every board here comes from.

Recovered from Auckland demolitions, de-nailed, graded, and remachined at the Titirangi yard. The result is boards that are straight, consistent, and machined to your exact width and profile — ready to lay.

The Three Varieties

Not all Rimu
looks the same.

Rimu comes in three distinct varieties depending on where in the tree the board was cut. Each has its own colour, character, and the era of home it is most likely found in. Knowing the difference matters — especially if you are trying to match an existing floor.

Variety 01
Heart Rimu
Rich dark brown to red-brown
Cut from the centre of the tree, Heart Rimu is the most sought-after variety. The colour is deep and warm — ranging from rich chocolate brown to red-brown — often with character knots that add life to the floor. It is hard-wearing, fine-grained, and ages beautifully. If you have seen a rimu floor that stopped you in your tracks, it was probably Heart.

Variety 02
Coloured Rimu
Amber, honey, and warm mid-tones
Coloured Rimu is a mix of heart and sap in a single board — often with both tones visible in the same plank. This natural variation creates a lively, characterful floor that many homeowners find more interesting than a uniform look. Predominantly found in homes built in the 1950s and 1960s. Great for extensions and matching period homes.

Variety 03
Sap Rimu
Cream to pale gold
Cut from the outer part of the tree, Sap Rimu is lighter and more uniform in colour. It has some knots and gives a brighter, more open feel than Heart — popular in homes of the 1960s and 1970s where the aesthetic was cleaner and lighter. If you want the warmth of Rimu without the darker tones, Sap is the right choice.

"Our builder said it is the nicest Rimu he had seen in a very long time. There was a really great ratio of heartwood to sapwood. The finished floor is really gorgeous."

Where It Works Best

Matching an old floor?
Adding a new room?
Starting fresh?

Rimu suits more situations than most people realise. Whether you need to match a heritage floor exactly, or you just want something genuinely New Zealand underfoot, there is an option here that fits.

01
Matching a 1950s–1960s floor
The most common request. Board widths are machined to match your existing floor exactly — so extensions and repairs disappear into the original floor. No visible join, no mismatched profiles.
02
New installs in character homes
If your bungalow or villa deserves a floor that belongs there, Rimu is the authentic choice. Nothing imported comes close to the warmth and history of the real thing laid properly.
03
Overlays where depth is limited
The 12mm and 9mm overlay options mean Rimu is achievable even when you cannot lift the floor or lose door clearance. Talk to David about what clearance you have and he will tell you what is possible.
04
Patching and repairs
Found damaged boards in an existing floor? Matching the species, width, and profile means the repair is invisible. Bring a board in or send a photo — getting it right is the only point.
